For 10 years now, British Divers Marine Life Rescue has operated a small hospital facility for seal pups in Cornwall. The aim of the facility was to support the region's larger seal rehabilitation centres, providing short term care for seal pups when they were full to capacity due to high and increasing demand.
In 2020, the charity came to the conclusion that they had outgrown their existing facility, which was also falling into disrepair, so in the summer of 2021, British Divers Marine Life Rescue created a brand new, purpose-built hospital for seal pups.
The BDMLR Cornwall Seal Hospital is a state-of-the-art facility, with space for 10 seal pups to be admitted for urgent care after they have been rescued by the region's local BDMLR Marine Mammal Medics. Pups come in for a variety of reasons, but often due to malnourishment, injury or illness (and/or becoming separated prematurely from their mother). The hospital provides a refuge for the pups in their time of need and is manned by a team of dedicated volunteers, including vets and veterinary nurses, who work extremely hard through the cold winter months to ensure every pup receives the very best care.
The costs of running such a facility are high. Most of the pups treated are very ill, some critically so, and hence require a whole host of veterinary medicines, diagnostics and equipment to get them back on track. They of course also need to be fed, sheltered, cleaned and kept warm. Any donations to the hospital are extremely gratefully received and will be put to good use ensuring these amazing animals have the best chance of survival.
Thank you for helping us to help them 🙂
