Story
Just wanted to send you all a note to say a very big thank you for your support of our recent entry to the Scottish Islands Peaks Race.
Alex and his running partner Tim did an absolutely fantastic job in tackling;
- Ben More on the Isle of Mull 24 Miles climbing over 3,100 feet
- All three Paps on Jura 14 Miles climing a combined 5,000 feet and
- Goatfell on Arran 19 miles climbing a combined 4,000 feet
The conditions for the runners were absolutely atrocious with 80mph winds at the tops of the hills and conditions under foot extremely wet owing to the heavy rain in the previous days leading up to the race.
Of course windy conditions are good for sailing and it provded to be the fastest race ever with the overall course record being broken by over 30 mins. Our boat SCRABBLE recorded its fastest time ever but I am sure that the fast sailing times did not help th recovery times for the runners in between their runs! As sailors of course we were delighted that we had the wind to sail and did not have to row the boat in light airs!
For the record we came a pretty credible 13th out of 50 boats….. something to aim for next year!
- Started 1200 BST Friday the 13th of May Oban
- Finished 0528 BST Sunday the 15th of May Troon
- Total Running Time 17 hours 2mins and 32 seconds
- Total Sailing Time 24 hours 11 mins and 3 seconds
Thanks for all your support!
Barry and Alex

OK - so after the excitement of the Awesome Abseil last year Alex Cumming and I are going to take part in the Scottish Islands Peaks Race.
This adventure race is for teams of Sailors and Fell Runners (both adult and teenage) and is held annually on and around the most beautiful parts of the West Coast of Scotland.
The Race starts in Oban with a short hill run, then you Sail to Salen on the Isle of Mull, run over Ben More, sail to Craighouse on Jura, run the Paps, Sail to the Isle Arran, run Goat Fell, then sail to Troon. The Race takes 2 to 3 Days and caters for Multihulls, Racers and Cruisers.
This equates to 3 marathons (half of which will be up mountains!) and over 150 miles of some of the most challenging seas in the UK.
This is going to be a big one!
Alex will be doing the fell running and I will be delivering him safely to the various islands by boat (thats the tricky bit!!)
We would really like to use this event to raise some money for the DofE and also to re-assure ourselves that we are not finished yet!
Your support will be warmly welcomed!
Barry and Alex
