How to Get to the London Marathon Start

To reach the start of the London Marathon, it’s essential to know which start area you’ve been allocated to (Blue, Green, or Red) and plan your journey accordingly.

Start Locations

The marathon starts at Greenwich Park with three designated start lines:

  • Blue Start: Best accessed via Blackheath Station.
  • Green Start: Best accessed via Maze Hill Station.
  • Red Start: Best accessed via Greenwich Station.

Transportation Options

1. Public Transport

  • National Rail: Trains from London Bridge, Cannon Street, and other central stations will take you to the closest stations for your start area:
    • Blackheath Station (for the Blue Start)
    • Maze Hill Station (for the Green Start)
    • Greenwich Station (for the Red Start)
  • Docklands Light Railway (DLR): You can also reach the start area using the DLR, particularly for Greenwich Station.
  • London Underground: While there are no Underground stations right at the start, you can use the Jubilee Line to connect to DLR services or walk from nearby stations.
  • Free Travel for Runners: Show your race bib for free travel on the day using the Underground, Overground, DLR, and buses.

2. Walking

  • Once you arrive at your designated station, expect a 10-20 minute walk to the starting area. Signage and marshals will guide you to the correct assembly zones. Be prepared for some uphill sections, especially if walking from Greenwich Station.

Recommended Stations for Each Start

  • Blue Start: Take the train to Blackheath Station.
  • Green Start: Arrive at Maze Hill Station.
  • Red Start: Travel to Greenwich Station.

Arrival Time

  • Plan to arrive at your start area at least one hour before your assigned start time to ensure you have enough time to prepare, check your baggage, and navigate the crowds.

Additional Tips

  • Check for Road Closures: Extensive road closures will be in effect on race day, so public transport is the best option.
  • Pre-plan Your Route: Be sure to familiarise yourself with the area, and check maps for your bag drop and assembly zones beforehand to make your journey smoother.

By planning your route and travelling early, you can avoid the stress of last-minute delays and enjoy the build-up to the start of the iconic London Marathon.
