One of our Senior Partners , John Clarke, has been severely affected by kidney disease over the past few years and is currently awaiting a transplant operation. In support of John and his chosen charity, Kidney Research UK, the Afford Bond team have decided to take on this challenge to raise much needed funds to help the continuing research and valuable work that Kidney Research does. This is John's story:

'I found out I had chronic kidney disease 6 years ago when I went for a life insurance medical and was told that I couldn't get insured! I saw a kidney consultant about once every three months and basically forgot all about it after each appointment. September 2012 just before my wife Michelle's birthday party, the 'wheels fell off' and I remember the room spinning when I was told I needed a transplant or I would have to go onto kidney dialysis. We tried to do a living donation between Michelle and I which unfortunately failed due to a surgical error and I ended up on dialysis which I have to do 7 hours for 5 nights a week.

Dialysis keeps me alive for which I am mightily grateful and the support from the NHS as well as my family and friends is amazing BUT kidneys do a lot more than deal with waste - they are a vital organ and when they fail this seriously affects your overall health and well being in so many ways. It is a Tsunami which totally changes your lifestyle.'

There are two plans of attack for chronic kidney disease, there is a FIX (not a cure) which is a transplant, and John has now been on the waiting list for 21 months. The average wait is over 4 years and there are over 7,000 people on the list, sadly not everyone makes the wait. The other option is CURE and we are supporting Kidney Research UK to find ways to regenerate kidneys and revolutionise the transplant process which will prevent people like John having to go on dialysis. £25 funds 1 hour of research, so please help us to reach our target of £10,000 so that we can make a difference to the lives of so many people and their families who are affected by kidney disease.
