7-year-old is walking 40 miles to raise funds for poorly children
17 March 2023
Harvey’s hoping to raise £10,000 for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital through JustGiving.
A seven-year-old boy from Manchester is on a mission to raise £10,000 for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and his cousin, who is currently being treated there.
On 1st and 2nd April Harvey will walk a total of 40 miles from Alder Hey Children’s Hospital where his seven-year-old cousin, Zak is currently undergoing treatment to Old Trafford Football Stadium.
According to Harvey’s mother, Naiomi, Harvey came up with the fundraising idea himself in response to hearing the news that his cousin Zak had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer.
This is Harvey’s second fundraising challenge, having previously raised almost £8,500 for his school playground by walking more than 16 miles from Stockton Heath Primary School to Old Trafford.
His next challenge, which is more than double the distance of last year’s challenge has the backing of Manchester United Legend Sammy Milroy, his headteacher, teachers, friends and family members, who intend to walk alongside him.
Around 200 people are also expected to wait at the finish line at Old Trafford Stadium on 2nd April.
Naiomi Goodman, Harvey’s mum commented: “I’m so proud of Harvey and what he is doing for Zak and Alder Hey. He told me he wanted to do a big walk to help his cousin and other sick children at Alder Hey, which made me burst with pride.
“He is so kindhearted and always wants to put others first. I never imagined we would be here again, one year on from his first fundraising walk about to undertake a 40-mile walk.
“He’s so excited for the challenge, he’s checking the amount raised on his JustGiving page most days and reads through the messages of support and encouragement people have sent, the kind words really help Harvey on his long walks – it gives him that extra boost to carry on!”
Pascale Harvie, President and General Manager of JustGiving said: “Harvey is such an inspiration to us all. At just seven years old he came up with and took on this huge challenge to raise vital funds to help his cousin and so many other children being treated at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. Harvey, you are a super-star, good luck on your mammoth walk!”
Dan Harving, Harvey’s Headteacher said: “Harvey is a model pupil with exemplary behaviour, but it’s his thoughtfulness and kindness towards others that sets him apart. The £8500 which Harvey raised last year towards our school playground was phenomenal and we are so grateful for it. Given how impressively Harvey coped with his challenge last year, I have absolutely no doubt that he will not only rise to this challenge, but will absolutely smash it.”
