We provide free dentistry in Burma to relief the suffering of the poor

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

In October 2013 a team of a dentist and two dental nurses from West London Dental Centres travelled to Lake Inle in Burma (Myanmar),  as the first volunteers for the  British Charity Burmadent. We were able to help many hundreds of children who had extremely poor teeth, often suffering with multiple abscesses and pain. As well as undertaking large numbers of extractions, we also gave some dental health education to the teachers, and applied fluoride to the teeth of many hundreds of children.

We returned to Burma again in October 2014, this time with a group of four dentists and three dental nurses, along with two lay team members. Our work continued as previously, and firstly we visited orphanages at a shanty town in Yangon, where we again gave emergency care to many children, applied Fluoride as a preventitive measure and gave health education advice to the carers. We also attended other sites in Yangon including a village school in the countryside outside Yangon. On our return to Lake Inle, we were delighted to find that children from the Monastic  orphanage seen on the first trip had more stable dentitions when we visited again, so we were then able to visit more orphanages, treating children as young as 2 years old on table tops. In total we have already treated over 2000 patients, who otherwise would still be living in daily pain, with no access to dental care.

Our passion to help this community remains as strong as ever. We are now planning our next trip from our practice and will return to Lake Inle for two weeks in January 2016, as a team of four dentists and three dental nurses. We will be based at Lake Inle, and in addition hope to visit other sites in the country, providing urgent dental care to the poorest communities. Burmadent now has two fully operational mobile 'field hospital' dental units ready for use which will give us the ability to offer much more treatment than before

We could not undertake this project without the help of our patients, friends, families and businesses. We would like to thank everyone for their generosity for previous trips as for each volunteer, the cost of flights, vaccinations, modest accommodation and living expenses is approximately £2500. On behalf of my team, may I please ask you to support us on our next trip, and all donations however large or small are greatly appreciated. I hope to write regular diary updates during the trip so If you would like to be included on our emailing list, please send an email to the practice.

Thank you once again!

Our purpose is to encourge dentists to volunteer short periods of time to provide dentistry to the poor and disadvantaged in Burma, in particular around Lake Inle. There is no access to dentistry and oral neglect is rife. We need to educate and treat the 200,000 people living on the Lake.
