Story
Wellow Unit is a haven of tranquility for end of life care at St Mary's Hospital. We pride ourselves on going the extra mile to ensure that death for both our patients and their loved ones is as peaceful and dignified as possible. We are trying to create a less clinical environment and in order to do this, we need to purchase the 'extras' that are not funded routinely by the NHS.
For example, we have plastic chairs at the bedsides for loved ones to stay with patients, but people are often there for hours and these chairs can become uncomfortable. We want to be able to replace these with some recliner chairs to help keep loved ones more comfortable, particularly when the end is near and they don't want to leave the patient's bedside.
We are also working with colleagues in Children's ward to provide a safe haven for parents when they lose a child; a place where they can stay with their child until they feel ready to leave. In order to facilitate this, we would like to purchase a cooling system to help preserve dignity in death so that relatives can stay with their loved ones, which can also be used for our adult patients.
All donations, not matter the size, are gratefully received to help us provide an environment that is as comfortable and comforting as it can be at such a difficult time. Thank you.
