Story

Hey guys
my names Dean ware I've been riding my bike for a little under a year and really enjoy it, I've done numerous challenges including my everesting challenge on Monday 6th April I had a lot of people ask why I didn't do it for charity on this I decided I wanted to put what I enjoy most into giving something back in return. I wanted to do something for charity but what it for something local, upon this I did a bit of research and heard about a little boy called Luke Foulds from Penywaun who is currently undergoing treatment. I got in contact with Luke's family when I heard what this poor little boy had been through I knew this was the one! my ride will take part depending on the weather 24th/25th may 2015 where I will ride from penywaun where Luke lives all the way to Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwyll-llantysiliogogogoch and back to penywaun, The journey will be around 300miles round trip and I plan on doing it within 24hours.

Luke's story
In October 2014 Luke fell ill he was back and forth the doctors where they had taken his bloods because he was suffering with terrible headaches and just wasn't 100%. His lymph nodes were swollen in his neck and groin, Luke suddenly collapsed in his house back in November he was then rushed to hospital where they took more bloods. The hospital discharged Luke thinking he was anaemic, he was then referred to a specialist for further investigation. After weeks of waiting for a letter to see a specialist, Luke still wasn't 100%. The day before Christmas eve Luke was crying about the pain situated under his arm. When his mam investigated, it was then she realised Luke had a large lump there which you could see without touching the area. She booked Luke an appointment first thing Christmas eve. Where they took further blood test initially they thought he may have glandular fever at this stage Luke was petrified of needles having had so many taken in the last few weeks. Luke's mother struggled to get him in the room to have his bloods taken he put up a fight against the nurses where they had to hold him down to be able to take his bloods. When the results came back glandular fever was ruled out. So they went home and waited for the letter to see a specialist. Early hours into Monday 12th January 15 Luke awoke with severe headaches again, Luke's mother gave him Calpol in the hope to ease his pain but it did nothing, she again rung the doctor for an emergency appointment on arrival Luke was just slumped in the chair where he was sat this time looking very unwell. The doctor made the decision to call for an emergency ambulance to get him straight to hospital, He said I suspect it could be a virus but need to rule out meningitis. Poor old Luke yet again had to go through all the pain and fright of having his bloods taken again. His bloods were send down to the Heath Hospital in Cardiff, meningitis was ruled out but the bloods they doctor were getting back wasn't right. Luke needed to have a biopsy on the lump he had under his arm. After 3 sleepless night at prince Charles hospital Luke and his mam were taken to the heath hospital in order for the hospital to take the biopsy of Luke lump they too specialize in children with abnormal bloods. On Thursday 15th January Luke was taken down to theatre to have his biopsy where they also wanted to take a bone marrow sample. They surgeon went to see Luke family to explain they had removed  all of the lump from under his arm because they didn't like the look of the lump. Late that afternoon Luke mam  was called upon into a room where she was greeted by a consultant and 2 nurses she was told Luke had leukaemia. Luke mam described to me how her world fell apart that day, she was numb she just couldn’t take it all in. Luke was petrified with everything going on around him, he was sent up to the children ward called "sky". That was where he spent 2 weeks while he started his chemotherapy, he had to have a Portacath put into his side just under his arm for the drip and fluids to be feed through. Luke was later discharged still having to visit the hospital 3 times a week for his treatment which included having lumber puncture's where the chemo is put up through his spine also testing his bone marrow to see how well he was responding to the treatment. Luke was suffering with bad stomachs and shingles. He is now on a trail where he has to stay in hospital for at least 6 days while he has his treatment, this is over a period of 4 course. Luke treatments will last for 3 years and 2 months,
although it won't all be hospital stays he will be back and forth for his treatment also having treatment at home. If Luke suffer with high temperature he will have to stay in hospital for at least 48 hours in case he catches infections due to his immune system being so low, He has to be so careful of what he eats. He's off school at the moment Luke misses his friends, he misses doing the normal things he used to do as he has a high risk of catching infection, it prevent him from doing all the things he likes to do. When he has to stay in hospital for his treatment thankfully he has his mother by his side but he misses his stepfather his younger brother and sister this makes it very hard for Luke as it has such an impact on Luke life but he just takes everything in his stride now and is getting used to having needles! Luke's hair began falling out and started to thin so now he shaves it off although it does upset him. It's hard for all the family when they are all spilt up from each other during the times Luke is admitted to hospital, He is such an inspiration to everyone. Having gone through so much in the last 13 weeks since being diagnosed.
