What on earth is Polycystic Kidney Disease???
That is the most common question I’m asked when I tell people what condition I suffer with. To answer, it is the most common inherited, life threatening condition in the UK. It causes multiple cysts over both kidneys which kill off the healthy kidney tissue and ultimately leads to kidney failure. Along with that it causes high blood pressure which can lead to catastrophic brain haemorrhage’s.
Unfortunately this condition runs in my family, from my maternal grandmother, through my mum and three aunts, to myself and one of my brothers and sadly my eldest daughter also suffers with this.
Whilst we can live life relatively normally in the beginning stages apart from maybe some burst cysts and infections along the way, we are aware of the outcome of this disease. Kidney transplant or dialysis are the only treatments once we lose kidney function. Our kidneys increase massively in size and can make our tummies look like we’re pregnant! But sadly some people lose their lives before they get to transplant or dialysis.
I am not a runner, this will be a huge challenge for me and I’m terrified as well as excited! But I am doing this to raise money for the PKD charity which provides support and information for people suffering with this as well as helping to fund research for a cure for this debilitating disease.
I would appreciate any support by donations no matter how much. I fully appreciate that times are hard currently with the cost of living crisis! Thank you for reading and also if you’re able to donate!
