Story
Hello my name is Vicky
I will be completing a sponsored walk for the Stroke Association's campaign "Step Out For Stroke."
At the moment I am a student studying Occupational Therapy and am currently on placement with a stroke team. As well as having some personal experience dealing with stroke, being on placement has really opened my eyes to how potentially devastating it can be for the person and their families/friends. It has inspired me to raise some awareness for stroke and to support stroke survivors and their families. It is shocking how common stroke is! Did you know that:
- Stroke occurs approximately 152,000 times a year in the UK - that is one every 3 minutes 27 seconds!!
- 1 in 8 of those strokes are fatal within the first 30 days
- Stroke is the largest cause of complex disability - half of all stroke survivors have a disability.
There are 1.2 million stroke survivors in the UK but thousands of people don't have access to the support they urgently need. This is an issue that is very close to my heart and I cannot stress the importance of gaining a stroke diagnosis FAST.
Support during stroke recovery is very important and intensive therapy during the first few weeks after stroke can make a huge difference in their recovery. People can be affected in many complex ways including:
- Cognition & Memory problems
- Visual problems
- Emotional effects/depression
- Personality differences
- Loss of sensation to one side of the body
- Loss of mobility
- Speech problems
- Swallowing problems
These problems are devastating and life changing for a stroke sufferer and their loved ones. Lets make a difference then, to those thousands of people who need treatment urgently and the thousands of people requiring support on their road to recovery after stroke. Lets raise awareness for this life threatening and life changing condition during stroke month in May! Please give what you can and it will truly make a difference.
