In November 2008 our family was rocked with the news our oldest son, Connor, had medulloblastoma. A brain tumour measuring 3.15 x 3.6 x 4.6 cm had grown at his brain stem threatening his life. He was 11 years old at that time. Following a 6 hour operation, 9 weeks intensive chemotherapy, numerous scary procedures, and 6 weeks of radiotherapy, the team of paediatric oncologists at Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham were happy to monitor Connor with regular MRI scans. Reintroduction to school was going well. Unfortunately the routine scan in April 2012 showed the disease was back in 4 places in his head and spine. School was put on hold again as more operations and rigorous chemotherapy began. His body was badly affected by the 4 different types of chemo and he had to spend a lot of time on the children's ward at Lincoln County Hospital. By May 2013 his consultant was happy the disease was again wiped out. Monitoring with regular MRI scans restarted but a new growth started to develop on his right temporal lobe. It grew even though more chemo was given. On 2nd January 2014 Connor underwent stereotactic radio surgery (Google it) at the Royal Hallamshire in Sheffield to blast that tumour plus 2 more that were discovered during the procedure. In March the all clear was given. Big sigh of relief! Connor enjoyed his 17th birthday, went back to school but the September scan showed a small growth near his brain stem AGAIN. Chemo needed to start but the port in Connor's body wasn't working so it couldn't be administered, several more operations, and 7 weeks of lying flat in hospital found Connor ready for round 4 of chemo. My heart fell when the January scan showed 2 very small tumours had grown even though treatment was being given. I told Connor off for growing more, he told me off for crying about it. So we are currently on increased chemo and the next scan is later this April. Everything crossed. Connor has remained so positive and makes others smile and laugh. His younger brother has had to live under the cloud of cancer threatening his brother's life, he now receives counselling.
