Story
I completed my first marathon in Singapore 2006, dragging a 10kg tyre as I was training for a North Pole expedition. I followed this up with more tyre dragging marathons and during one of them I met this lady well into her 70s who said I should aim for the 100 marathon club. I laughed jokingly told her it would have to be with a tyre as I had only completed 26.2 and longer with a tyre. She walked and talked with me for awhile and inspired by stories of the amazing 170+ marathons she had completed, I confirmed I would take up the challenge!
At the same time I have taken up a mission, to see if I can change the attitudes of our society with a simple message to reduce the amount of trash that people individually produce.
Reduce
by:-
Refusing
single use items like coffee cups and nurture a
Bring Your Own
(BYO) thermal cups to companies; BYO containers for take out;
Repairing
items - the internet has a vast resource of information to help you repair items
Reuse
Many items can be re-used. If you don't want to reuse it - then give it away through organisations like freecycle.org and http://www.ilovefreegle.org/
At the same time, I will also try to inspire societies to being more proactive and supporting EarthWatch who has a socio-ecological mission to bring together different cultures, to research into our environmental impact and educate those who become involved. Their research can form the basis to help change the attitudes and behaviours of corporates.
