Story
My son Tommy has muscular dystrophy. It's hard for me to type that sentence. I don't want it to be true, I don't want Tommy to have MD, I want his body to work like everyone else's but the truth is it doesn't.
Muscular dystrophy is a progressive muscle wasting disease. Tommy will lose the ability to run, walk, lift himself up from a seat and will be confined to a wheelchair. Currently there are no treatments or a cure for MD. It's so hard not to be able to say 'everything will be ok' to your child. Fundraising is a way of showing that you're doing all you can to help by raising money for research into a cure.
This year I have decided to do 3 things: the Treble for Tommy.
All challenges include running.
I have a particularly bad relationship with running. I was always the last one around the field in school, embarrassed and humiliated by how terrible I was at it, so in the last 20 odd years I haven't attempted it again. 3 months ago I decided I would run this year for Tommy. I would be his legs, I would show him you can do things that you think you can't do. I'd run because I knew it would be the hardest thing I could do. My first attempt was a whole minute before I nearly collapsed!
Challenge no 1
10km through Regent's Park in London - 17th May
Not in my leggings and T-shirt but in my Supergirl outfit!!!!
Challenge no 2
26 mile relay marathon Stoke Mandeville - 30th August
Tommy and I are part of cohort of participants who will be running a mile to cover a 26 mile marathon distance, including people suffering with MD. Tommy will be running a mile with me. I'm so proud of him. It will be tough for him but if he can't run for a mile we will walk or I'll carry him so we can proudly pass on the baton.
Challenge no 3
Royal Parks Half Marathon - 11th October
This challenge terrifies me, but I'm signed up so there's no turning back now. I have no idea how I will manage to run 13 miles, but I know my determination will see me through. If I can do this I know I can do anything.
If you'd like to support me, Tommy or other people suffering with muscular dystrophy I'd be so grateful. You can donate online or if you prefer text TREB53 £10 to 70070 to give £10 (charged to your mobile phone bill).
