Story
In recognition of Indigenous Literacy Day, Tract are holding a book raffle to raise money for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.
The Literacy Gap
Only 36% of Indigenous Year 5 students in very remote areas are at or above national minimum reading standards, compared to 96% for non-Indigenous students in major cities.
Apart from the historical, health, social, and educational disadvantage issues, many remote communities don’t have many, if any, books - generally less than 5 in each home.
We're aiming to raise $2,000 for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. These fund will be used to:
- Gift new, culturally appropriate books to remote communities.
- Run story time sessions for children under 5 to promote familiarity and engagement with books, and support parents and carers in reading and enjoying books with their children in their first language.
- Run programs to inspire the communities to record and publish their own stories in the language they choose.
