Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
As many of you know Frank sadly passed away, surrounded by his family, at home in April.
He had given Cancer ‘the Harvey smith’ or the two fingers, five years ago in May 2015. The treatment he received enabled him to meet his grandchildren, Esme and Sonny, and enjoy another five wonderful years, some of the happiest of his life. For this we are forever grateful to Dr Peake and his team at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
When it returned in 2019, we thought once again he was going to beat it. Sadly following an operation to remove a tumour in the summer, a very rare form of sarcoma had spread to various parts of his body and even the most aggressive chemotherapy couldn’t help.
When he deteriorated quickly at home, and the shadow of Coronavirus meant any support at hospital or hospice could mean exposure and not being able to be with his family, Macmillan facilitated contact with the John Taylor Hospice in Erdington, Birmingham.
Without doubt they provided the most professional, timely, considered and courteous care we have ever experienced. They facilitated access to doctors, equipment and nurses/outreach carers, quickly and always with an understanding and tenderness that was so much needed at a difficult time. They worked alongside an excellent Community Nursing team, for whom we are also extremely grateful.
The hospice is a charity and so reliant on fundraising and donations. We were ignorant of just what a vital service a hospice and particularly a hospice at home service, provides to a person at the end of their life, and most particularly to the loved ones caring for them but reaching the limits of what they can provide.
Frank was a determined, independent and proud person. He didn’t want to leave his home or his family and found being cared for difficult but the team from John Taylor did everything just right. The right tone, the right care, and the right advice, at the right moment.
We would be extremely grateful if you could give even a small donation to help them provide this support for another family when they need them. We know it’s even more difficult to give generously at the moment with such uncertainty but think of it of buying him a pint of Granny Smith or two! Or three....
We hope to see many of you in the future to raise those glasses in person and remember his life, so as soon as gatherings are allowed again, you will hear from us.
Thank you on behalf of all of us!
