Story
In the week 8-12 February 2021 we are challenging the Tonbridge School community to engage in Sri Lankan themed activities to celebrate our long partnership with Child Action Lanka and to help raise funds for their vital work during the Covid-19 Pandemic.
CAL will share talks and resources about Sri Lanka, and their work with vulnerable children and families, including a demonstration of how to cook a traditional Sri Lankan vegetable curry. We are asking students to cook along to this film, and prepare an evening meal for their families. We then invite everyone to share anything they might have spent buying a take-away meal and instead donate to CAL.
Tonbridge School has worked in partnership with Child Action Lanka since 2015, running regular fundraising events and annual trips with students to work in CAL centres across Sri Lanka. Throughout the Covid pandemic links have continued, with Tonbridge students writing letters or meeting on-line with CAL students to share their experiences.
In 2019, Tonbridge School funded and equipped a new CAL Child Development Centre in Batticaloa. This centre now supports over 450 children and has recently opened a pre-school and playgroup. This appeal aims to cover the costs of feeding nutritious meals to these children throughout 2021.
Across Sri Lanka there are hundreds of vulnerable children in both urban and rural areas – orphans, street children left to fend for themselves, children from poverty stricken families, and victims of war and conflict. Child Action Lanka (childactionlanka.org ) aims to protect the most disadvantaged children and provide holistic education, health and nutrition promoting their basic needs, rights and interests to enable them, their families and communities to be individuals who bring positive change.
CAL provides Day Care, Pre-school and After school care facilities through Child Development Centres, including meals, educational support, bathing/laundry and life opportunities to children from street and underprivileged circumstances.
