We fund research and raise awareness to shine a light on Lewy body dementia

Story

11 years ago our Dad, Tim Malyon, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) with Lewy Body Dementia (LBD), it’s with a heavy heart to say his journey in this life has come to an end. On Christmas day we are doing a swim in the sea to raise money for The Lewy Body Society, which is sadly not as well recognised as it needs to be.

About Tim

Prior to his diagnosis Tim was a prominent photojournalist, BBC Radio 4 producer, drug rehabilitator, counsellor, charity organiser and so the list goes on. He always did work to give back to the people and touched the lives of many through his kind and gentle nature. There are no words that would do him justice to say how remarkable a man he was and he is greatly missed by us all.

What is Lewy body Dementia?

Lewy Body Dementia is the degeneration of cells in the cerebral cortex (frontal lobe), from protein deposits, that causes a loss of executive functions, extreme swings of consciousness, hallucinations, PD-like symptoms and sleep disturbances. Due to the similarity in symptoms to Alzheimer’s and PD LBD is often misdiagnosed, with the wrong treatment often having detrimental and sometimes fatal consequences.

About the Lewy Body Dementia Society…

The Lewy Body Dementia Society is the only charity in Europe to specialise in LBD, despite LBD accounting for 15-20% of all dementia cases and being the second most frequent cause of age-related neurodegenerative dementia. They raise well needed awareness of the disease, support sufferers and families and fund research in Universities including Cambridge, UCL, Newcastle and Southampton.

Thank you to everyone who donates, or even takes the time to read this, we really appreciate it to help and support those still living with LBD.
