Story
Thank you for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
On the 2nd August 2012, eight pupils from The John Lyon School in Harrow will embark on what is the most ambitious expedition to date in the history of the School. The Green-Lyon Expedition, Greenland will not only test their physical and mental endurance, but provide vital and cutting edge scientific research. Working along side some of the leading professionals in the field of Greenland exploration, scientific research and university lecturers, our young expedition team will have a once in a lifetime experience.
The team will depart the East Greenland Airstrip of Constable Point near Scoresbysund in a boat along Hurry Sound; the selected docking location will become the Expedition Base Camp on the east coast of Liverpool Land. The team then plant to trek near the River Bodal to the upper glacier western flank where they will determine a suitable camp location to port the expedition kit and food for Base Camp 2. They will spend a number of days shuttling the supplies to Base Camp 2 and once complete the team will start exploring the upper glacier and Emmanuel Gletscher Glacier tongue leading to the e easterly coast of Liverpool Land which should provide stunning views across the Artic Norwegian Sea. On return to the upper glacier the following few days will be spent returning to Base Camp 2 to restock supplies and explore the glacier movement, climb previously unclimbed summits and map the areas visited for submission to The Royal Geographical Society with IBT, London. The team will spend 20 days in Liverpool land with at least 12 of those days exploring the Upper Glacier and peaks.
Working in conjunction with Dr Helen Findlay of the Plymouth Marine Laboratory the team will be involved in new ground breaking research techniques focusing on the impacts of Global Warming on ocean and climate systems.
As part of the expedition the team will document their trials and tribulations throughout their journey which it is hoped will form part of a documentary produced in conjunction with the Royal Geographical Society. The team's ascent of previously unmapped glacial peaks will enable them to assist in the mapping process in conjunction with members of the Royal Geographical Society.
We are proud to have has the Patron of the expedition, Sir Ralph Fiennes OBE and the expedition is supported by:
Dr Helen Findlay: the teams scientific advisor. She has a PhD in Biologicial Oceanography, is highly respected in her field of ocean acidification and carbon cycling. Helen has successfully participated in three field expeditions to the Artic and is a member of CATLIN survey.
The Royal Geographic Society: the UK's learned society and professional body for geography, founded in 1830, it seeks to advance geography in the UK and worldwide, actively promoting, supporting and advancing research, education and fieldwork.
Simon Baker Bsc (MIA) ML(w): the teams technical advisor who has lead several expeditions to Greenland and other exciting destinations.
Paul Walker BEd Hons, F.R.G.S: a world leading authority in mountaineering and ski-touring expeditions to Artic Greenland, organising more than 150 expeditions to Artic Greenland, Baffin Island and Svalbard over the past 19 years.
Ralph Durbridge (MBE)(S): the Expedition Team Leader. As the Head of Outdoor Education at The John Lyon School, he has led expeditions to Nepal, Vietname, India, Morocco and Iceland.
In addition to physical training, the boys will also prepare for solitary isolation in the Artic and endurance in the climate, with challenging weather conditions in a remote, uninhabited and desolate area. The boys will also undertake all the Project Planning, Resource Management, Financial Management, Team Building and Fund Raising required to ensure this projects is a success.
The charecter building and enhanced skillset gained from this project will also be of enormous benefit to the boys' future career prospects.
All of this will only be possible through the pupils' efforts and your support. So please show your support by donating to this page.
