Story
At 2 weeks old it was found Charlie was extremely unwell with a condition called SCID, a condition where your body cannot protect itself against any incoming infections or virus’, allowing it to
take over the body. Even a common cold could kill, affecting 1 baby in 58,000 in the UK. Luckily his parents found out Charlie had this condition due to the introduction of a new heel prick test done on babies at birth which was only introduced in September and is only on trial in certain parts of the country, with Manchester being one of them! Charlie was the first baby in the country to be diagnosed with this condition following the new heel prick test. Normally parents would be unaware that their baby had the condition and they would die within the first year due to their bodies not having an immune system to fight off infection and virus.
A month or so on the family relocated to Newcastle and on 25th Nov 2021 Charlie received his bone marrow transplant from Dom (Dad), and are on the road to getting Charlie to full health and leading
a happy life. The Bubble Foundation and Dr.Gennery (who we must mention) do fantastic work in this area and do both research for future treatments, protect patients in "bubble" environments at the Great North Children’s Hospital and of course help with the treatment and care itself, including chemotherapy and bone marrow transplants.
Charlie will continue to benefit from this care for a while yet, and this page is to help give something back to an organisation that his parents will never be able to thank enough.
