Story
Who doesn't love riding bikes? We all remember the amazing feeling of freedom the first time we mastered the balance and coordination needed to roll away from the person holding onto the saddle. For us, that intrepid feeling just never went away.
in 1996, when we were young and (even more) foolish Mike and I went on our first bike tour together, traversing Ireland, with little idea of what we were doing. Our bikes took us on an unexpected adventure that unbeknownst to us would result in me meeting my wife!
After many separate adventures across many countries, the onset of middle age and the lessons of the pandemic prompted us to get back on the road together. In July 2022 we set out to ride 3,815km (2370 miles) across Australia, from tropical Darwin to chilly Melbourne. Our plan was to ride a little over 100km per day, entirely self-supported, travelling through some of the most remote and arid areas of the driest continent on Earth. You can find out more about this journey, and some of the others we have ridden, plus a few plans for the future here at www.twonumptiesonbikes.com.
By riding across Australia we were able to raise enough money to provide 63 bikes, but the job is far from finished. As every cyclist knows the perfect number of bikes is n+1, but one more is not enough. Each and every bike can be life-changing. This is why we continue to support World Bicycle Relief in their aim of providing Buffalo Bikes to children and families. The cost of delivering one fit-for-purpose, specially-designed Buffalo Bike is currently £120, which equates to about AU$220 or a little over RM650. WBR also create and maintain the infrastructure necessary to ensure the benefits of their bikes are both long-term and sustainable. £50 is enough to provide a full set of mechanics tools, and £25 will purchase a new wheelset. We how you might consider helping in any way you can, as every donation has the capacity to change lives.
Stay shiny side up!
David and Mike
