We fight for the hope of young people to create a society built for all children

Story

*Automated description of the charity. My personal description follows the first paragraph

Children in this country are facing multiple problems that are leaving them overwhelmed. They feel alone, unloved and don’t know where to turn. By supporting The Children’s Society, you’re helping these children get the help they urgently need. Our supporters around the country fund our services, volunteer with us, and join our campaigns to show children and young people they are on their side. Together we make a real and positive difference to the lives of children in this country. With your support we can change the lives of even more.

I've been considering taking part in a charitable event for the past three years or so but have never had the confidence nor the correct mindset to do so. However, now I atleast seem to be on the right track, I feel as though it's a better time than ever to do something.

I myself haven't exactly had the greatest childhood, which is why I feel we need to focus on helping the younger generation in order to better the future. Just so you know why I've chosen this specific charity, I feel it may be best to give a "brief summary" of my personal experiences and the affects they had on me.

When I was 4/5 years of age my Father came home drunk and started to beat my mother in front of me and just left her in the corner of our front room. During this, i had remained behind the sofa instinctively holding my sister behind it to avoid her running out and getting hurt herself. My Father ended up leaving my mother dazed in the corner whilst he stole some items and then ran off. This led to my mother being hospitalised for approximately a week. I received numerous counselling sessions for years afterwards and had at times, repetitive  nightmares of the event until I was 18.

My Father then later burnt down our flat with us inside it using petrol and a Molotov cocktail at around that period of time. It was completely unprecedented as to why he took it to that extreme. The prison sentence he then received for all of this was shockingly dismal.

After this and some other events that took place later on in life, including being bullied through out my school life, I found myself feeling lost, unloved and eventually attempted suicide. I never felt like I belonged at my home or anywhere in fact and was often told I was just like my Father to somewhat spite me. That had a much worse affect than whats was perhaps originally intended, it just felt sincere at the time. I was then kicked out of my house and had no contact with my mother from the age of 16-18, not until I eventually moved back in but still felt as if I wasn't welcome and that I was a burden to everyone I knew, a feeling I sometimes still hold on to today.

I could go on further, maybe with just more detail but I suppose the initial message I want to give is that you really don't know what people have been through or how they feel. Someone could be on the verge of suicide or hurting others because of the thoughts going on in their heads. There are so many thousands of children and teenagers feeling as though they're alone and have nowhere to go and it should be all of our duties to do what we can to help.

In a sense, you could say that there are many other charities closer suited to my personal experience but that's the beauty of it. There's so many other charities and so many different ways to help. No matter what charity you choose you'll be helping someone! So why not. I chose this charity because of the way it came across to me aswell as the vast array of ways it helps people. That's all it should take, you do some research and if it appeals to you and makes you feel as though you've made a difference then you've made a good choice. That's why I chose this one.

I know this is quite a lengthy "summary" but it felt better for me to explain what I could. Believe me,  there could have been alot more.

Thank you if you've read this and have made the decision to donate or even if you've just taken the time to read this. It's appreciated more than you could believe. Please visit The childrens society website so you can understand the cause. I really hope the money I raise helps others to avoid the events, emotions and thoughts I myself have experienced. Thank you, Connor signing out, Peace.
