In late 2016, my family set me a challenge of running 5k every day for a month. I didn't know at the time if I could do it, but the month came and went, and I kept going. First, I thought I would attempt to run for three months, then 100 days, and then I began to seriously think about trying to do it for an entire year. Over time, I changed the daily distance, sometimes allowing myself to run a little less if I needed to recover. Years 2 and 3 came and went, and I kept the streak going. The most I ran in a day was 42k at the 2019 Dublin Marathon.
Year 4 was, well, 2020, the year of COVID. Like many people, I kept the streak going as a way of dealing with all the lockdowns and restrictions we were facing. Luckily we all stayed healthy. As of today, January 16, 2021, I have covered 6,975km in total since the streak started.
Recently, I began to think of a target, an end point for this running streak that we could use to raise funds for the disadvantaged which have been hit harder than ever this year. 1500 days seems like a good number, and it had the advantage of only being a few weeks away. I have chosen the Peter McVerry Trust, which is a wonderful charity based in Ireland that has done so much for homeless and otherwise disadvantaged people.
I asked my family -- all over the world -- if they would like to accompany me on this final push and I am thrilled that many of them are going to do this alongside me. Hopefully that will culminate on February 7th with as many of us as possible running or walking the final 5k. I know that there are a lot of good causes that people spend their money on, and -- with that in mind -- I intend to sponsor myself. I would, of course, be deeply grateful if anyone else would want to contribute. But there are lots of ways to contribute, and one really important way is to get in touch and keep me company (virtually) on a run.
