Story
This is my story...
In July 2013 I started my final hospital placement as a student midwife, I had even begun counting down the five weeks of shifts ahead of me before I came to the end of my three year degree and qualified as a midwife, a job I had dreamed of doing for the past 4 years. However, on Saturday 28 July 2013 my world stood still and was turned completely upside down.
I was a two minute drive away from home when the accident happened. My car was hit at a cross road junction by a vehicle that went through a red light. I was knocked unconscious and suffered a severe brain injury. I was rescued by the Yorkshire Air Ambulance who took me straight to Leeds General Infirmary. The health professionals expected the worst but I was given a second chance that day and I now call the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, Angels of the sky.
My injuries involved me having to learn to walk again, I was so grateful to have regained the ability so 11 months later in June 2014 Team Mozza walked the three peaks of my Yorkshire homeland and raised a whopping £2,211.29 for the lifesaving charity that will always hold a special place in my heart.
In September 2014 I finally felt ready to meet my Superheroes Matt and Leon and thank them in person for saving my life. It was a very emotional day but thankfully because I don’t remember being rescued I was able to enjoy my visit and learn a lot more about the YAA and the amazing work they do.
I may never be 100% fully recovered from some of the injuries caused by the accident but my determination hasn’t stopped me from walking the three peaks (ok I only managed two but Team Mozza did all three, haha!), graduating with a First degree, becoming an employed qualified midwife, and getting back behind the wheel. So this year Team Mozza are taking part in the Yorkshire Tough Mudder in August!!
A huge thank you to the police, paramedics, nurses, neurologists, opthalmologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, the ABI team, my case manager, my wonderful family and friends who have supported me through the most challenging time in my life, and let’s not forget my superheroes Matt and Leon. I’m doing this for all of you to show my appreciation and to raise as much money as possible for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
The YAA relies solely on the generosity of the public to help save lives across the region. We need to raise £9990 per day to keep the helicopters in the air. The Yorkshire Air Ambulance helps to save lives. One day it could be yours, that day it was mine.
