Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

We're writing this page on what should have been our son Nick's 35th birthday. Tragically, Nick took his own life nearly seven years ago, during a prolonged episode of acute manic depression. Our family then chose to support MQ because we felt at sea in a contested area of knowledge. We appreciated MQ's clear commitment to international research of the highest quality across the spectrum of neuroscience and psychiatry. And we valued MQ's consistent support of early career researchers. With your help we were able to support Martijn van den Heuvel's pioneering work on mapping the brain to assist doctors in distinguishing bipolar disorder from schizophrenia. Martijn's work has proved so successful that it is now used to help diagnose a wide range of psychiatric and neurological conditions. A link to Martijn's work will be appearing on this page shortly.

Now we'd like to invite your support for another MQ Fellow: Dr Katherine Young, of King's College, University of London, who is studying youth depression and anxiety during and after the Covid-19 pandemic . You can read more about Katherine's work on her MQ page: https://www.mqmentalhealth.org/research/youth-depression-anxiety-during-and-after-the-covid-19-pandemic/

We think that the topical subject of her research would have been close to Nick's compassionate heart. Please help us to help MQ support Katherine's work! But if you prefer to support another MQ Fellow, or just give with no restrictions to MQ, that's fine with us. Here are details of the projects of two more MQ Fellows who are also working with young people: Dr Mark Taylor of the Karolinska Institutet, Sweden: https://www.mqmentalhealth.org/research/investigating-the-causes-and-consequences-of-mental-ill-health-in-young-people-with-autism/ and Dr Ruchika Gajwani of the University of Glasgow: https://www.mqmentalhealth.org/research/testing-a-pilot-intervention-for-young-people-with-early-borderline-personality-disorder/

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity. So it's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
