Story
4th September 2018
Most of you know that I ran the 2017 London Marathon last April raising money for Women v Cancer which supports 3 cancer charities Breast Cancer Care, Ovarian Cancer Action and Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust. Cancer has affected my family & a number of friends - Ovarian particularly is such a silent cancer because it can go undetected for so long - the symptons get masked and it is very difficult to diagnose at the early stages when it is easier to treat.
And some of you know that since then, I have swapped my running shoes for lycra instead, donning the padded shorts and cycling to take part in the London to Paris Charity Ride.
Some of you have asked if I am raising money again - and whilst I raised the money when I ran the marathon, of course any additional donations will be very welcome for the Charity and hence why I am sending this out on the eve of departing. It has been a fabulous summer of cycling & I have really enjoyed it particularly as I've been able to train alot with Biz making those long rides fun & enjoying exploring Scotland by bike. We have also discovered Strava - not sure if that is a good or bad thing for my competitiveness! Since about April this year, I have clocked up over 1000 miles and includes a long climb up to the Lecht from Nethy & back. Actually the Bridge of Brown bit was the worst if anybody knows the route!
Biz & I are all ready to take on this challenge with 145 other women - should be a blast. No doubt we will be using our social media feeds to post pictures. Thank you for reading. Susan xx
January 2017
As many of you know, I did all the training for 2016 London Marathon but due to injury had to pull out. Last year, I was raising money for 3 charities - British Heart Foundation, Breast Cancer Care & Ovarian Cancer - and there were lots of reasons for this & because I'd been lucky enough to get a ballot place, I could choose who to support. Even though I did not run it, I raised £750 for which I was very grateful.
In December, my good friend Biz Logan, who is now on the road to recovery from Breast Cancer, asked me whether I fancied a new challenge to ride to Paris from London with her, raising money for Women v Cancer (Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust, Breast Cancer Care & Ovarian Cancer Action) ... inevitably I've said yes to the challenge and because Cancer has affected my family and so many friends too, it made sense to use the London Marathon as one of my major fundraising opportunities.
The training has been different this year - I have not pushed so hard and although it takes up a lot of time, I have enjoyed it more. And I am feeling fit & ready. At the time of writing this, I have 2 more long runs to do - one of which I will be doing over in Knoydart - then onto the taper before 23rd April 2017. I am running in memory of both Mum who died from ovarian cancer and Hugh, who always wanted to run the London Marathon but never got the chance (although he did run the Belfast Marathon a lot faster than I will do in London!).
If you are able to support me, that would be great and much appreciated.
