Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page. All the complicated tree and wildlife info in our story below is written with the help of the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust (thanks Kate).
For our 25th (silver) Wedding Anniversary on 14th September we wanted to do something to help the planet so to mark the occasion we’ve decided to plant some trees with the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust to help fight climate change (trees are great for capturing carbon) and to create new habitat for wildlife.
With the help of the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust and because it’s our silver wedding we have chosen to plant species of disease resistant elm including the silver barked Ulmus Silver Horizon.
As an added bonus these trees benefit butterflies and their survival in NE Derbyshire. The loss of English elms to disease has had a huge impact on the white letter hairstreak butterfly, the caterpillar of which feeds only on elms and so planting disease resistant cultivars will help reverse their decline whilst boosting habitat for many other insects.
Derbyshire Wildlife Trust will source the trees, each tree costs around £30-£50 so any donation towards this no matter how small is appreciated.
We will be planting them in November (as that’s the best time) on two of the Derbyshire Wildlife Trusts nature reserves near Chesterfield. If you would like to come and plant with us that would be great we will let you know the details nearer the time.
Thank you for helping
Sue and Mark
