GLASS Tilberthwaite Appeal · 2 March 2015

We are a conservation charity, working to look after special places for everyone.

Story

TARGET ACHIEVED
GLASS would like to thank everyone who has contributed to this initiative. Firstly to the National Trust of working with lane users to keep the lane open. We have been amazed at the response from individuals and organisations representing those who use green roads.
Work has already been completed on one wall and started on another.
The purpose of this appeal was to support an appeal by the Lake Distict ranger for the National Trust covering Little Langdale, including the Tilberthwaite UCR which, as you’ll know, is a popular legal route with green lane users.  The route is suffering quite badly from erosion and, understandably in the current climate, the council feel unable to invest in any maintenance of the surface.

Unfortunately, the erosion is causing two of the historic stone walls to become unstable, and they’re at risk of collapse.  This could cause a safety hazard to users, major stock management problems for the tenant farmers, damage to our historic environment, and cost many thousands of pounds to re-erect.  The National Trust are planning to deal with this issue pro-actively and reinforce the eroded banks beneath the walls, in order to stop any further erosion – but they really do with your support.
Help GLASS support the National Trust in saving these walls which will help to keep this lane open to all users. The National Trust understand that vehicles, bikes, horses and walkers have a legal right to use this route and do not wish to stop them. The work to repair this lane will cost in the region of £4000 in labour and transporting stone.
The National Trust wish to point out that they will not be working on the surface of the lane.
