Story
In the area of Brighton and Hove, 44,000 people live alone. A lack of social connections has been shown to be as harmful to our health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day (Holt-Lunstad, 2015). The effects of loneliness are so detrimental to mental health, and in many cases deadly, with suicide being the biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK.
In current circumstances, those living alone are now more isolated than ever and need our help. Together Co aim to support vulnerable people like this with befriending, social prescribing and volunteering services in Brighton, Hove and beyond. Just £10 could train a phone befriending volunteer to support an at risk person.
This is an issue very close to our hearts, as some of us have family members who have suffered as a result of social isolation. It really is a serious problem and we must connect as a community to look after those who are more vulnerable.
