Story
Hi
It has been home to the Zaghawa and Tuareg. It has had Nubians, Egyptians, Phoenicians, Greeks as neighbours and will soon be accommodating me, for a short period of time at least.
I have the opportunity to trek through a small portion of the 9,400,000 sq km expanse of the Sahara in aid of the very worthy organisation, Havens Hospice. I will be dodging the likes of the deathstalker scorpion (which I hear tastes good if dipped in chocolate) as well as the lesser known “desert fighting camel”. It will be a total of 10 days out in the Great Desert, with up to 7 hours of hiking per day. I will post an itinerary for the 10 days shortly…
Havens Hospice comprises two elements:
Fair Havens is an adult hospice which opened its doors in June 1983 and since then has cared for over 20,000 patients and their families.
Little Havens Children's Hospice, Essex, officially opened in March 1998 and since then has cared for over 1,000 children and offered vital support to their siblings and families. I have had the good fortune to see Little Havens for myself and meet some of the dedicated team.
I was convinced I wanted to do this trip before I met them, and now I have no doubt in my mind that their cause deserves as much assistance as possible. For more information on the charity itself, please follow the link on the right-hand side of this page.
Thanks for reading.
ps. all donations will go to the charity as opposed to supplementing flights, scorpion medicine or hookahs.
