Story
Mental health and mental illness have two totally different meanings. Mental health and mental illness are being used more and more as if they mean the same thing, but they don’t. Everybody has mental health just like everybody has health. In a lifetime not everybody will experience mental illness, but everyone will struggle or have a challenge with their mental well-being (I.e. their mental health). Mental health is our emotions, our thoughts and feelings, ability to solve problems and the understanding of the world around us. A mental illness is an illness that affects the way people think, feel, behave or interact with others. One thing that helps any mental illness is being able to talk about it, for some people this is probably easy, and others may find it hard, not everybody has family or friends to turn to. With the NHS being stretched and doctors saying take these tablets and come back in a month help and support can seem none existent, so you carry the weight on your shoulders and pretend nothing is wrong. On the outside to you appear normal but on the inside its tearing you apart. You may be thinking what does he know, or how do I know? The answer is I've suffered from mental illness for many years and still suffer now, I've been in some really dark places with it, so I know first-hand how it feels and how it affects people.
The photography part, I want to use my passion for photography to help raise money for a charity that helped me, a great charity called self help. https://www.selfhelpservices.org.uk/ The work these guys do is priceless. They offer support to young people and adults suffering from mental illness, I'm willing to put myself out of my comfort zone and give back as they gave to me.
