For those of you who have followed Sophias journey you know she had a very traumatic birth. During that she also suffered a Shoulder Dystocia leaving her with a Brachial Plexus Injury to her Left arm (Erbs Palsy). Sophia only moved 2 fingers at birth and at 5 months of age she underwent a major surgery at LGI to explore the damage to the nerves in her left arm. During Surgery the Specialist made the decision due to the extent of the damage to Sophias nerves to complete a Nerve Graft Surgery where she had Sensory nerves taken from both legs. Obviously Sensory nerves do not work aswell as Motor nerves and therefore Sophias function and ability will always be slightly different. But with on going Physiotherapy and regular reviews her progress so far has blown us all away.

We found the Erbs Palsy Group when Sophia was 5 weeks old. By 12 weeks we were no closer to a Specialist referral by our own Physio. Something which should have been done by 8-12 Weeks of age if there is unequal arm movement. Now 2 lovely members from the Erbs Palsy Group offered their advice. One of them gave me a call and we spoke for almost an hour. They then guided me through a self refferal. They listened to me cry when I found out Sophia needed Surgery. They privately messaged physiotherapists in Leeds. They messaged me at midnight when I was anxious and scared and then the day of Surgery came and they were there all day at the other end of the phone. With a message, with advice. Just generally keeping me and Hayden sane. We have seen first hand how this money supports its members. Now when we say Sophias journey would be very different without this Charity we do not say this lightly. It would be. Beacause without them we would have continued to believe everything was OK when it wasn't. We owe them so much and right now they have been hit hard with Covid. Now we refuse to imagine a world where they are not there. We refuse to imagine not sharing every moment of Sophias recovery with them or asking their advice day or night. Or being part of this huge extended family we have grown apart of.
