Story

After a very tough few months for us as a family (plus another lockdown added to the mix) I have set myself a challenge to exercise or take part in some form of activity everyday in May. I have decided to do this challenge for a few reasons: firstly to raise some money for a charity that is unfortunately now part of our lives and secondly to give myself a purpose to focus on, after struggling with motivation and my emotions. Thirdly and most of all, to contribute towards supporting my dad and make him proud, and keep his spirits up.

I wanted the challenge to be fun, include family and friends and to make some happy memories whilst benefiting an important cause.

The charity that I am supporting is called Mesothelioma UK which supports people with Asbestos cancer.

Mesothelioma is a malignant tumor that is caused by inhaled asbestos fibers and forms in the lining of the lungs, abdomen or heart. Symptoms can include shortness of breath and chest pain. The life expectancy for most mesothelioma patients is approximately 12 months after diagnosis.

Mesothelioma UK is a national specialist resource centre, specifically for the asbestos-related cancer, mesothelioma. The charity is dedicated to providing specialist mesothelioma information, support and education, and to improving care and treatment for all UK mesothelioma patients and their carers.

The charity integrates into NHS front line services to ensure specialist mesothelioma nursing is available at the point of need. This is achieved through a growing network of specialist mesothelioma nurses, regionally based in NHS hospitals but funded by Mesothelioma UK.

So for the 31 days of May I’m going to take part in some form of exercise every day. I’ll be trying a few new activities to push myself out of my comfort zone and also aiming to get back into some of the exercise that I have missed. I will post a daily log.
