Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our Ocean Challenge fundraiser!
Much like our 2.6 Challenge last year, we are taking on an 'Ocean Challenge' here at the Centre to raise vital funds. We have challenged our staff, residents, clients, College learners and School students to assign themselves different 'ocean themed' tasks (running, walking, drawing, baking, anything!) and this is where we need you! Perhaps you could sponsor us, or make a donation?
We have chosen the theme of the ocean to support four brave rowers currently rowing from California to Hawaii with no aids or breaks. The team are known as 'Endurance Limits'.
The inspiration for the trip is Hadley, Darren's (one of the rowers) son who is 14 and who developed severe epilepsy as a toddler. When he was young, he suffered a series of catastrophic seizures that almost claimed his life. His resulting all-encompassing disability means he cannot walk, talk or feed himself, and requires 24-7 support. He attends our specialist School and Children’s Home, and benefits from our specialist on-site Health and Therapy support to care for his unique medical and therapeutic needs, and to keep him safe, well and happy.
They are aiming to beat the current record of 39 days to row from Monterey to Honolulu. They will be rowing across the North Pacific in two-hour shifts, 24 hours a day, seven days a week and, if they capsize, will have to contend with 50ft waves and shark-infested waters. They will be alone in the middle of the ocean, eating re-hydrated food cooked on a small gas stove using seawater transformed into drinking water. Solar panels on the boat will support their communications and other equipment. If successful, they will be the oldest crew to complete the challenge as they are all in their 40s.
They are aiming to raise over £50,000 and their fundraising will enable us to refurbish, modernise and kit-out a bespoke Health Centre where we can run on-site Neurology, Epilepsy, Psychiatry and general Health clinics, and link up with our therapy provisions to offer a more holistic model.
Our Ocean Challenge will contribute to their overall target, with Hadley and his housemates leading the way with different challenges and a cake sale!
