Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
We are planning to create a suicide loss memorial quilt in the north east of England. Our project is led by Tracey Beadle of the charity Quinn’s Retreat and Suzanne Howes.
Both have lost children to suicide and are determined to make a difference, and bring hope, in their children’s names.
Our vision is that this powerful artwork will take centre stage in our region. The quilt will tour public places, provoke thought, be a catalyst for conversations and raise awareness about suicide. Alongside this, the quilt will bring hope and healing to those who have lost loved ones.
The quilt will be made of individual fabric squares, each crafted by those bereaved to suicide, representing and honouring their loved ones who have died.
We are following in the steps of landmark projects in Greater Manchester and Yorkshire. We will use the same ‘Speak Their Name’ title and adhere to the guidelines and safeguards developed.
Our project is both a suicide prevention and postvention initiative. Suicide loss is traumatic, isolating and leaves heartbreak in its wake. We know people bereaved by suicide are at higher risk of suicide themselves. Additionally, the latest national data tells us that the north
east has the highest suicide rate in the UK.
The creation of the quilt will be embedded in our local community. Workshops will be facilitated by volunteers across the regions of Darlington, County Durham, Newcastle, Sunderland and Teesside.
The creative space will bring connection, understanding and mutual support, in a safe and accepting space.
We will also use online meetups, social media and closed groups to facilitate a hybrid approach, encouraging peer support and widening our reach.
We will partner with our local communities to deliver this project. This will include Public Health, NHS, education, arts, sports, mental health support and bereavement groups.
