Story
Just over five years ago my dearest godmother - Lynne Walker - or as my
brother James and I call her, The Fairy Godmother - was diagnosed with
Pancreatic Cancer. It was a huge shock.
A strong, larger than life character with the biggest heart, I'd spent my whole
life thinking she was invincible.
After a year of visits to the doctor and endless tests she was eventually
diagnosed and rushed to hospital to have the cancer removed to stop it
spreading. That part of the operation was a success but it led to septicaemia
and multiple organ failure.
Her life hung in the balance for what seemed like months; numerous trips back
and forth to intensive care.
Thankfully that inner strength, that huge heart, refused to succumb and slowly
but surely, week after week, month after month, Perm returned (the
nickname Perm is an "in" joke for those of you that know her
well).
Now depending on what research you read approximately five per cent of those that
are diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer are alive and well after five years.
She knows it, we all know it; it's a miracle Lynne is here today.
So to mark my dearest godmother's return to full form and fitness I have set
myself the daunting challenge of trekking up the highest peak in Africa and the
highest free-standing mountain in the world, mount Kilimanjaro.
The nine day expedition, starting January 31st through
to February 8th - will test me physically and mentally to my limit as
I trek for up to eight hours a day. Plus there's the unknown of altitude
sickness which you can't prepare for.
Now I know what you're thinking....he wants my money to pay for this
once-in-a-lifetime experience, how dare he! But that's not the case, I will be
funding the trip myself. What I'm asking, very politely I might add, is
for your generous donations to go towards the continual funding of Pancreatic
Cancer UK (PCUK), one of the leading charities in this country fighting
this deadly form of cancer and a charity very close to Lynne's heart.
Nearly 9000 people in the UK get Pancreatic Cancer
every year, 23 every day to be precise. Not many survive.
So I need your help so there can be more happy
endings, more five year anniversaries. And to contribute towards PCUK’s mission: to
double survival rates and improve the patient experience.
Your generosity is greatly appreciated.
Happy five years Fairy Godmother!
