Story
What am I doing? Put simply I am skating 370 miles solo from my home in Southend-on-Sea in Essex, to Newquay in Cornwall. It's quite far, it will rain and there will almost certainly be a head wind the whole way...that's England for you. Along my journey I will be couch surfing with friends, family and in some places just knocking on doors hoping someone will take me in. And all of this just to go for a surf. In total it should take around 12 days but I'm sure detours will occur and interesting places will be explored.
Why do it? Initially it was simply an adventure to go on, to do something that you usually just see in videos on the internet and say 'Wow that's cool' show a friend and forget about. But if they can do it so can I. I mean why not? Its the Easter holidays and I have time off (ignoring the Uni work...), why not get out and do something productive instead of sitting in front of the TV.
Why SAS: Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) is an environmental charity which protects the UK's oceans, waves and beaches for everyone to enjoy. They do this through campaigning, volunteering, conservation, community action, education and scientific research.
I imagine many people reading this will know me as a watersport lover and are probably one yourself in some way or another. I also imagine a large proportion of you pursue these interests on UK beaches, so are directly affected by the efforts of SAS to keep your beaches clean over the past years.
But they are not just aimed at helping surfers and watersports enthusiasts. SAS protect the shorelines you use in Summer for a week of two on holiday the whole year round and they're what allow us to have such amazing quality shores throughout the UK. Everyone is affected by the work these people do from enjoying a warm day at the beach to stopping sea and bird life dying from entrapment by litter or killed by chemicals dumped in the sea.Without the help of fundraising through activities such as mine and the many others that take place year round, SAS would not have the resources to continue making sure that our beaches are clean enough to enjoy taking part in the sports and activities that we love.
About Me: My name is Jonathan Snow or Jonny to most people. I'm 19, and currently in my 2nd Year at the University of Southampton studying Marine Engineering. I try and spend most of my time outdoors and have too many hobbies including Windsurfing, Sailing, Cycling, Skateboarding and playing the guitar to name a few. Youtube has helped me a lot in these pursuits, especially skating, and I've become an avid self teacher of anything and everything. It is a great tool and one which I do not believe enough people use or are even aware of. For almost anything you can think of, someone has made a video explaining how to do it, and from that you can learn an inordinate amount that no single person could teach you.
