People living with and after cancer who are more active are known to experience less fatigue, pain, anxiety and depression. Research shows that physical activity following a cancer diagnosis can also reduce the risk of cancer recurrence. However, access to exercise classes with specialist trainers and delivered in a safe environment, is currently extremely limited and often unavailable. Active Against Cancer hopes to change this!
Active Against Cancer is a unique health and wellbeing service with exercise at its core. It is delivered by Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust and funded by Yorkshire Cancer Research and aims to improve experience, wellbeing and treatment outcomes for cancer patients in Harrogate. Active Against Cancer has a specialist team of dedicated physiotherapists and trainers working from their picturesque base at the Harrogate Sports and Fitness Centre. They offer a wide variety of classes, activities and at-home based programmes, to help get everyone active.
Andy and Simon have been running for many years and have always been passionate about exercise and activity. We are running the Punk Panther Reservoir Dogs Ultra Marathon to raise awareness of the benefits of exercise for people living with cancer and to support Active Against Cancer.
The Reservoir Dogs is a 35 mile tour around 7 of the reservoirs that serve the Leeds area, starting with Lindley Wood Reservoir in North Yorkshire. The route then goes to Swinsty and Fewston reservoirs before heading over to John O'Gaunt, Beaver Dyke and Scargill reservoirs. The route then returns to West Yorkshire via Stainburn Forest and Almscliffe Crag to Eccup reservoir before finishing in Pool-in-Wharfedale.
Please support Andy and Simon on this adventure to help ensure Active Against Cancer's continued success. We feel that this exercise service should be available on the NHS to all those living with cancer throughout Yorkshire and beyond.
All proceeds raised through Active Against Cancer will be donated to Yorkshire Cancer Research.
