Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page and read my story….
Almost all of us know of someone who has had to battle breast cancer, either indirectly, or directly where it has deeply affected close family and friends. It is the most common cancer in the UK. 1 in 8 women will face breast cancer in their lifetime. This is a frightening figure when you think about it, but thanks to research, more people are surviving than ever before.
My closest person is my Grandma. She was the one who showed me that a homemade card is always better than a shop-bought one; advised me to "save half/spend half" so as one day I could buy a house; and said that if I dreamed of being a dancer then that's what I should do because the most important thing in life is to do something that makes you happy.
My Grandma is a survivor in life…one of the fiercest kind. Aged 91, she has been incredibly lucky and has lived a full and happy life since her first diagnosis 42 years ago, but she is now dealing with a recurrence.
When she was diagnosed in the first instance, breast cancer was rarely spoken about and she kept it completely private. She just says things were different back then. Nowadays there a wonderful support groups and charities in place, such as Breast Cancer Now. Women & men are encouraged to share more openly, perform personal checks and more money is directed towards finding a cure.
Breast Cancer Now is the main charity for breast cancer in Scotland, as well as operating all over the UK. Their vision is that by 2050, everyone who develops breast cancer will live. They are researching how to prevent it, detect it earlier and how to treat it effectively at every stage. They make the voices of patients and their families heard within the health service. Their public health campaigns help educate thousands in becoming breast cancer aware and empower them to take action to reduce risk.
I am very aware of how lucky Grandma has been and am thankful for every moment we get to spend together. Some patients diagnosed are not as lucky and this devastating disease can not go on ruining people's lives. My motivation to run comes from all the brave people who have gone through it in the past, are currently are going through it today, and those who do not yet know they will have it in the future.
Let's realise Breast Cancer Now's vision and make it happen so there is no future for breast cancer!
If you donate on this page, your money will be sent directly to Breast Cancer Now - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
Thank you so much in advance and I hope to see some friendly faces on my run around London on 24th April xxxx
