Story
The Sensory Garden in Harrow Lodge Park is the only designated recreational space for the visually impaired in Havering.
For many of the users they don't have the luxury of having a garden at home so the Sensory Garden has become part of their life in more ways than one. It's a memorial sanctuary for those who have lost loved ones to seek solace, it's a garden where visitors can be at peace, enjoy nature, make friends and ultimately boost health and Well-being.
So far all the restoration and improvements have been undertaken by volunteers, a whole heap of love, donations and out of pocket expense.
Our aim is to continue to revitalise the space bringing interesting features for users who have a sensory impairment.
What we want to do:
* Build a tactile map of the garden - so that those with visual impairments can feel their way around the space
* Build a canopy for shade - So that visitors can shelter from the sun whilst enjoying their surroundings as there is no shelter or shade currently
* Install a living sensory Archway - So that when visitors walk through the space they can brush against the flora for an aromatic delight
* Repair some of the memorial benches that have began to rot
* Repair the memorial water feature which has been damaged
* Repair the memorial swing bench which has been damaged due to misuse
* Increase textured and tactile planting - to enhance visitors enjoyment
* Create a tactile music wall for younger visitors with sensory needs
* Add another 2 picnic benches so that more sensory groups can meet and socialise safely in the space
The Sensory Garden and Friends of Group is looked after by local registered charity Havering Volunteer Centre (HVC) who aim to safeguard the space and ensure that it is used for purpose. HVC as a charity are able to fundraise and receive donations on behalf of the Friends of Group.
Havering Volunteer Centre have also been instrumental in the upkeep and volunteers who loving tend the space each week.
