Take collective action with us and #MatchYourMeal
*Update 1 March*
In response to the escalating humanitarian crisis in and around Ukraine Schroders will double match all money raised through this appeal – with this additional matching funds being distributed to the Red Cross Ukraine Appeal which will support the Ukrainian Red Cross Society and the International Committee of the Red Cross to provide aid, like food, medical supplies, clothes and shelter.
By donating to this page you are both helping relieve hunger in Afghanistan and supporting Ukrainian refugees – with every £10 donated resulting in £30 to our chosen charities
The famine in Afghanistan
There is a hunger crisis in Afghanistan and families need food now. 95% of the population do not have enough to eat. Afghanistan is suffering from its worst drought in 27 years. At the same time, winter temperatures are dropping to below -16⁰C.
Increased conflict, the recent Taliban takeover in August this year, and the ongoing impact of Covid-19, have led to mass population displacement, exacerbating chronic hunger and poverty. The country is in crisis.
3.2 million Afghan children under five are expected to suffer from acute malnutrition by the end of the year, and at least a million are at risk of dying. Without immediate action, many families in Afghanistan won’t survive the winter. With fuel and food prices rising and with the country still in flux, this winter is likely to be one of the hardest for many years. We need to act now.
Our intended fundraising impact
A full six week course of therapeutic food costs £42 to save a child’s life and help nurse them back to health. With gift-matching from Schroders, the impact of donations will be doubled:
- £5 provides 2 week’s nutrition treatment
- £10 provides 4 week’s nutrition treatment
- £21 will help a child fully recover from severe malnutrition
- £42 will save the lives of 2 children from severe malnutrition
About Action Against Hunger
Action Against Hunger was founded in 1979 with programmes in Afghanistan. We have permission to work in the areas where we run programmes and robust measures in place to ensure that any funds raised reach their intended destination, which will be mobile health clinics and people facing malnutrition. Action Against Hunger’s qualified teams treat under-nutrition and cure related diseases before they become fatal.
