Lake Zurich Marathon Swim · 8 August 2010
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
As you probably all know, I've done a series of events over the past few months, have been training hard and I am even on the wagon (which is tough in itself). On Sunday, I am swimming the length of Lake Zurich (well actually I'm doing half of it together with my relay partner Tom Sprange). We are swimming from Rapperswil to Zurich a distance of 26.4km and we have 11 and a half hours in which to complete it. We are not permitted to wear a wetsuit, and so I am desperately hoping we get good weather, especially after my recent experience of open water swimming which resulted in hypothermia, an ambulance and a Turkish doctor getting me naked (any excuse!)
In order to inspire me when things get really tough and get me through it when I 'hit that wall', I thought it would be good to do something for someone else for a change, especially after what has been a very long, often selfish journey in getting here.
Jamie Saunders was a 24 year old married man and father of 3 children. Jamie fell ill on 14th May 2008 and was admitted to St Barts hospital with severe bruising and blood blisters in his mouth. Within 2 days he had gone blind and was suffering from brain damage. He suffered a stroke which paralysed the left side of his body and further affected his mind. 23 days after his diagnosis with Leukaemia, he passed away. It's a tragic story.
Although Leukaemia can now be successfully treated in the majority of children, it still has devastating effects; treatment is gruelling and the future is very uncertain for those it strikes.
Children with Leukaemia are the UK's leading charity dedicated to fighting Britain's biggest childhood cancer and they have been working towards finding a cure since 1988. They get no government funding and they need your support and sponsor money to continue this work.
