It was a Sunday morning when my life got turned upside down. I had been out the night before at a friends 40th birthday party, I had such a good night with friends and I was my normal happy out going self. I woke up on the Sunday morning, I had plans to go out for lunch for my mums birthday but little did I know I would be spending the next 6 days in St George's hospital in London. I suddenly became very unwell. I had lost my vision and had lost all feeling in my limbs, I had no control over my body and was sweating uncontrollably, then came the unbearable chest pain as if someone was pressing down on my chest with all of their weight, my partner and I assumed it was a panic attack at first but as my vision and feeling came back the chest pain remained, it had eased slightly but was still uncomfortable, I knew this was not a panic attack. We called nhs direct and I explanied everything I had just experienced, within a minute of hanging up the phone the ambulance had arrived and it became apparent something was not right. My blood pressure was unusually low and the ECG was abnormal. I got rushed to St George's hospital and as soon as I arrived I had a swarm of doctors and nurses around me carrying out various tests. One test showed I had blood clots on the arteries leading to my heart, the cause was unknown and still remains unknown so far. I spent the remainder of my time in hospital attached to a heart monitor, taking various daily medications, constant blood tests and further tests of which showed I have a hole in my heart. I had gone through life so far being very active and showed no signs of this hole in my heart but suddenly I had to deal with being told 'you have had a significant heart attack' how could this be true? I was 23 years old, 23 year olds don't have heart attacks surely? But I was wrong, yes this was rare but I am proof this can happen. You never think this will happen to you but it can. I still have unanswered questions and I am still an out patient at St George's hospital and hopefully one day I will be able to know what caused these blood clots, I may need surgery, I may be on medication for the rest of my life. I have had unbelievable support from family and friends and the doctors and nurses at St George's were amazing from the minute I got there to the minute I left. The British heart foundation deserve every donation they recieve, their groundbreaking research is helping drive up the survival rate after heart attacks and I am forever greatful. It's a long road ahead but I will get there. I am determined to get there.
