Why CALM?
In 2012 we lost our wonderful son Lloyd Cochran to suicide and found CALM’s resources very helpful, although suicide will affect each person in different ways and you have to find one that works for you.
One suicide directly affects 135 people - leaving a lasting impact on family, friends, colleagues, neighbours and acquaintances. In the case of Lloyd this number was significantly higher due to him being such an amazing son, brother, friend, classmate, work colleague, acquaintance who brought joy to people’s lives.
Unfortunately, 1 in 5 of us will have suicidal thoughts at some point in our lives and in particular men who are very poor at sharing their feelings. So, of the 125 lives lost every week to suicide, 75% of all UK suicides are male18-45 years old. CALM exist to change this. They aim to reduce suicide in all genders and people. As a village we have had too many young lives lost and nationally the suicide rates are raising in females but more worryingly for our major employers in the area farming, that is seeing a significant rise in suicides.
Also remember we can make a difference too by really checking how our family members, neighbours, work colleagues are truly feeling
