Story

On the 14th May our daughter Sammy Jo Brandon passed away after a 2.5 year battle against breast cancer, Kim and myself have had time to reflect on those 2.5 years and we would like to point out some specific moments, observations and outstanding people that we need to thank or mention. When Sammy Jo was first diagnosed with breast cancer it hit us very hard, we pulled together and found our own roles in this journey . The first moment that stands out to me is a heated discussion I had with Sammy Jo , she told us that she probably would not have chemotherapy and if she did it would have to wait until her IVF treatment was completed, alternative cancer treatment had became a serious option and she had done the maths on the IVF stastitcs a minimum of eight eggs were required. That night I could not sleep thinking about Sammy Jo's decision, thats when I realised she had grown up and was taking charge of her own destiny, I cried myself to sleep knowing I could not protect her as a Dad should. Week by week she got stronger mentally and more determined to fight it, and the fight was going to be all or nothing. The only life she wanted was one with children and a set of boobies. Most people will never understand this , myself included. Over time after many conversation and a lot of thinking I started to understand how brave these choices really were and when the breast cancer returned in her brain and lungs knowing it was terminal she took the word brave to a whole new level , I am sure most of you know how amazing she was over her last few weeks. palliative care at home with Sammy Jo has been the most rewarding but stressful time of our lifes. Planning her own funeral occupied Sammy Jo and probably distracted her from the real problem , T A Newmans funeral directors were absolutely fantastic they accommodated all her requests, spending a lot of time discussing and listening to her . Thank you Terry, Rob & Sue. Over time I intend to upload little stories about Sammy Jo's journey and thank different people that helped us through this difficult time. The Sammy Jo Brandon foundation is now set up and the first event has been organised by Sammy Jo's Partner Jack . I hope to see a lot of you at the event. Until my next upload a big thank you for all the support you have given us.
