Story
Hey guys! My name is Safiyya and I’m a fourth year dental student studying at kings and this summer I will be travelling to Bangladesh with the charity Selfless as part of their global health leadership programme which aims to reduce health discrepancies the world over.
I will be travelling there with a group of other students as well as qualified dentists, doctors and nurses with the aim of providing much needed medical and dental care to the most poorest communities in Bangladesh.
I will be taking part in the ‘a brush with kindness ‘ campaign which aims to bring awareness to the importance of oral hygiene. We will be visiting schools and providing children with free biodegradable toothbrushes and toothpaste, giving them with the tools and knowledge they need to look after their oral health.
The money raised will also go towards three healthcare camps which will be set up to provide free medical and dental care as well as onsite medication and baby bundles for pregnant women.
Several other projects will also be funded including Porishkar which means ‘clean‘ which is how people describe their eyesight after receiving the cataract surgery we will be providing. In Bangladesh avoidable blindness leads to joblessness and hence poverty. Hence the surgery will save someone’s sight and inshallah give them their life back. A single procedure costs only £30 so by donating this small amount you can see how far your money can go.
I am really looking foreword to taking part in this eye opening and rewarding experience, and I would really appreciate any donation you could make, no matter how small.
Thank you for your help
Safiyya
