This fundraiser is to raise money to buy ‘activities’ that can be used by inpatients receiving mental health treatment from Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SABP) hospitals during the COVID-19 outbreak.
SABP provide NHS mental health services across Surrey and NE Hampshire, including hospital inpatient services for people whose mental health difficulties can't be managed in the community.
Mental health inpatients and the frontline staff caring for them face unprecedented challenges during this coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. All visiting by family and carers to patients has been suspended. Furthermore, leave for patients has been suspended. This puts an increased pressure on the staff to provide activities for patients to engage in. The length of stay in hospital depends on a persons needs, but can range from a few days to a few months.
Activities are in short supply. Patients and staff would be thankful for the purchase of things such as: arts and crafts materials, books, self-care items, basic sports equipment, DVDs, games, puzzles etc.
It is well known that mental health recovery is supported when people have the opportunity to participate in activities. Activities can help:
- Provide a break from difficult thoughts and emotions
- Improve mood, e.g. reduce anxiety
- Promote relaxation
- Improve physical fitness
- People find things they are interested in
- Give people a sense of accomplishment
- Take attention away from unhelpful coping strategies
- People to talk and feel less alone…and find a moment in the day when they can laugh
