Story
I have always dreamed of making use of my midwifery skills and knowledge abroad and now I am lucky enough to be doing this as part of the Poole Africa team heading out to Uganda this October. I love travel and immersing myself in different cultures and believe we can learn a lot from each other when overcoming challenges in healthcare in our efforts to provide safe care to mum and baby . As midwives we have the privilege of supporting families throughout pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period, however for many in Uganda this start to life and journey into motherhood can be perilous. Maternal mortality in Uganda is among the highest rates in the world (368 deaths per 100,000 in 2021), despite the causes of maternal deaths being generally preventable.
In October 2022, I am going to Lira, Northern Uganda for 2 weeks with Poole Africa link. I am going with a small team of healthcare professionals (including midwives, anaesthetists, an infectious diseases microbiologist, a breast surgeon, and a GP) to teach clinical staff, including midwives and students. We will be sharing practice, education, awareness and providing equipment, it will make a difference to those that really need it.
The Poole Africa link charity was set up in 2009 and was initially formed with Wau Hospital in South Sudan. Due to political unrest the charity scoped and found a link with Lira in Northern Uganda and their 500 bedded hospital and university. Fund raising continues this vital work and in the past has provided essential PPE, equipment, emergency equipment, oxygen and so much more.

Even a small donation will reach those that will really benefit.. so thank you in advance.
