Story
Laura was born with significant hearing loss due to maternal Rubella. Although she had some good hearing in her right ear, the left ear was more impaired. In February 2014 Laura suddenly noticed the hearing in her 'good' right ear had deteriorated rapidly without warning. She was then diagnosed with Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss. This is irreversible and hearing aids are no longer of any use.
After the initial shock at this news Laura set about finding out all she could about the options and services available to her. She found Hearing Link! They have been a great source of practical and emotional support for both Laura and Carl. They were both sent on an intensive rehabilitation programme to learn to manage and cope with this huge change to their lifestyles.
As a result of the help she has received Laura is now actively involved with Hearing Link writing blogs and offering email support to others coping with hearing loss.
Please spare what you can to donate to this little known charity. The difference they have made to Laura's life is amazing.
Towards the latter end of 2014, Laura's natural hearing was well below the NICE guidelines to be eligible for a cochlear implant. She had a very successful implant fitted in December 2014, switched on in January 2015. In January 2016 Laura also suffered SSHL in her left year. Sadly, according to current rules, adults may only have one implant.
SSHL can effect anyone not just those who already suffer some degree of hearing impairment.
