Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I met Ruth and Mark, founders of Friends of Conakry Refugee School, over ten years ago at our Community Choir in Bridgnorth and I have been supporting the charity ever since. Ruth and Mark had rescued the school from certain closure and they set up the charity to ensure its continued survival.
A school of over 500 students from refugee backgrounds in Guinea, one of the poorest countries in West Africa, Conakry Refugee School has an excellent reputation both for its academic performance and for its ethos of equality, tolerance and compassion. Its promotion of access and education for girls as well as its stance on supporting them on controversial issues like FGM and early marriage makes it unique.
The charity has been working with the school to make it more self-sustaining and whilst good progress has been made, this is threatened by Covid-19. However, the school survived the ebola outbreak of 2016 during which it had to close, and they are determined to meet the challenges presented by the current pandemic.
The school is temporarily closed once again and the planned fundraising events in the UK have been cancelled. Friends of Conakry Refugee School are desperately trying to ensure that the school can continue to support pupils and staff during these uncertain times whilst ensuring it can reopen to continue its work as soon as it is safe and practical to do so.
As a small charity in difficult and uncertain times, your support is vital and very much appreciated. Further information is available on the FCRS website www.fcrs.org.uk
