Story
I have supported the fundraising efforts of CHESS by sleeping out in churchyards more than 10 times since 2007. CHESS Homeless exists to support the single homeless in Chelmsford and surrounding areas, and on the last Friday of November the charity usually holds its annual organised sleep-out in the grounds of Chelmsford Cathedral. In Covid-2020 this biggest fundraiser of the year has had to be cancelled. I have responded to the appeal to do what I can to help make up this deficit. CHESS is using the hashtag #CHESSsleepin, but I don't like to make it too easy for myself, so I didn't sleep-in but I chose a wooden bench in my back garden on the night of Friday 27th November 2020. This took place from 10pm until just after 7am on Saturday. Being off the ground on a bench was obviously pure luxury, especially as the bench is 5 feet long (with arms) and I am over 6 feet tall! The updated picture is of a bleary-eyed me with no makeup on Saturday morning, having made it through the night. Please read more about the work of CHESS Homeless at www.chesshomeless.org
